A recall is issued by either the NTHSA or manufacturer. A recall may be issued if the car or its equipment fails to meet the safety guidelines. If there is a safety recall, then the manufacturer is required to fix the problem for free. You will likely get a notice in the mail if a recall has been issued. The letter will tell you to take the vehicle to the dealer and get the problem fixed.
If the issue is serious, then you may get a phone call. The dealer has 10 years to fix the problem. The only exception to this is tires. The dealer will only have 60 days to fix the tires. If the dealer is unable to fix the issue, then they may give you a loaner car. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that the dealer does this.
